EU remote
Backend Engineer
About this role
ABOUT THE ROLE Join a fast-moving energy technology company building the operating system for the next generation of electricity supply in Europe. The engineering team is developing a modular billing engine, low-level energy-market communication protocols, and a full accounting ledger — powering dynamic electricity plans for households and hardware manufacturers across the continent. As a Backend Engineer on the core infrastructure team, you'll work on the systems that sit at the heart of the platform: scalable, reliable, and designed to handle the complexity of real-time energy markets, embedded billing, and regulated electricity supply.
WHAT YOU'LL DO - Solve for complexity through design — translate ambiguous, multi-layered business and regulatory requirements into clean, maintainable backend architecture. - Scale the core — own and evolve the critical services underpinning billing, ledger, and market communication systems as the platform grows. - Bias for action — ship with speed and confidence; make pragmatic trade-offs and iterate quickly in a fast-paced environment.
- Raise the bar — champion engineering best practices, participate actively in code review, and help grow the technical culture of a small but high-calibre team. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Required - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience. - 3–10+ years of backend development experience. - Strong proficiency in TypeScript (Node.js), including a solid grasp of asynchronous programming patterns.
- Production experience with PostgreSQL and an ORM (e.g. Drizzle) for data access and schema management. - Experience with Next.js, including API routes or server components used for backend services. - Familiarity with distributed systems concepts — designing scalable, maintainable core services. - Experience integrating Stripe payments and related billing flows. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, an ownership mindset, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
- Willingness to work on-site in Berlin, Germany. Nice to Have - Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools (e.g. Temporal). - Experience in energy, fintech, or other regulated / billing-heavy domains. - Exposure to API-first or headless platform architecture. Tech Stack - TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, Hono - PostgreSQL, Drizzle ORM - Temporal, Stripe - Tailwind (front-of-backend / server components) COMPENSATION & BENEFITS - Salary: €80,000 – €120,000 per year, depending on experience.
- Visa sponsorship is available for eligible candidates. - Opportunity to join a small, high-impact team at an early stage and shape core technical decisions from the ground up. LOCATION This role is on-site in Berlin, Germany. Candidates must be willing to work from the Berlin office full-time. Visa sponsorship is available.
