In 2026, Donorbox was named by Built In as one of the Best Places to Work in Washington, DC. 🏅 Donorbox is rated the #1 software for fundraising, donor management, and nonprofit payment on G2 based on hundreds of verified customer reviews — a reflection of the care our team puts into building products that nonprofits trust.
The Role We're looking for a Senior Accountant to take ownership of our day-to-day accounting operations and help build a highly effective, highly efficient finance function. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants real ownership: you'll manage cash and controls, keep us compliant across every jurisdiction we operate in, run a tight monthly close, and turn our numbers into insight leadership can act on. This role also comes with a mandate to modernize how we work.
A number of our accounting processes and systems were built for an earlier stage of the company and are due for a refresh. You'll help lead that evolution — improving our systems, tightening our processes, and increasing automation — so the function scales without adding headcount. You'll report to our Fractional Controller and will oversee a Contracted Jr. Accountant who handles high-volume processing work, so you'll also bring strong judgment, clear communication, and a coaching mindset to reviewing someone else's work.
Responsibilities Cash & Treasury Own weekly AR and AP aging reviews, keep DSO trending down and DPO disciplined, and manage the dunning and vendor payment cadences. Maintain strong cash controls, including dual approvals on all disbursements, card-level spend limits, and monthly balance sheet reconciliations. Deliver a weekly cash report that answers, at a glance, how much cash we have and what moved it. Run periodic reviews of banking fees and idle cash placement to improve yield without compromising liquidity.
Tax & Compliance Own filing accuracy and timeliness across federal, state, sales tax, and international obligations. Manage equity administration end-to-end, including 409A cadence, grant bookings, cap table reconciliation, and monthly stock compensation expense. Ensure accurate, on-time payroll across all payroll/PEO providers and support the annual compensation review cycle. Month-End Close & Reporting Own a disciplined, predictable monthly close, including revenue recognition, expense close, and account reconciliations.
Prepare consolidated financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) with eliminations where applicable. Build and maintain a rolling multi-year forecast that stays current every month. Prepare executive-ready financial reporting and lead budget-vs-actual conversations with department leaders. Manage deferred revenue and stock compensation accounting. Business Partnership Partner with department leaders on budget-vs-actual reviews, flagging renewal timing, resourcing gaps, and one-time vs.
trending variances. Identify and document tax optimization opportunities, such as R&D tax credits and deductibility of stock compensation. Support Revenue Operations with accurate commission calculations, customer credits, and billing dispute resolution. Team Leadership Directly oversee and review the work of a Contracted Jr. Accountant, including accounts payable/receivable processing, expense coding, contractor payroll, reconciliations, and tax filings.
Set clear expectations, provide feedback, and ensure everything that comes out of the team is accurate, timely, and audit-ready. Process & Systems Transformation Help modernize our accounting infrastructure, including our chart of accounts and how spend is categorized and tracked. Improve how accounts payable and employee expenses are approved, processed, and paid, with an eye toward automation and stronger controls. Rethink how departmental budgets are set, managed, and monitored to give leaders more autonomy and Accounting more leverage.
Refresh our sales tax strategy and multi-state approach. Build out expense forecasting capabilities to give the business better forward-looking visibility into spend. Qualifications & Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or active CPA candidacy strongly preferred. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle month-end close ownership. Experience with multi-state and/or international tax compliance.
Familiarity with equity administration platforms (e.g., Carta) and stock compensation accounting (ASC 718). Experience reviewing or managing the work of a junior team member, offshore accountant, or outsourced provider. Strong Excel and financial modeling skills, with experience building forecasts and executive-level reporting. Proficiency with QuickBooks or a similar general ledger system; experience with modern fintech tools (e.g., Brex) and payroll/PEO platforms is a plus.
Track record of improving or modernizing accounting processes and systems, not just operating within them. Excellent communication skills and a proactive, detail-oriented approach to problem-solving.
