Senior Backend Engineer
About this role
ABOUT THE ROLE A fast-growing, Y Combinator–backed AI startup in the supply chain space is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the backbone of an AI-powered platform that plans and executes how consumer goods are produced and moved globally. You'll join a small, high-velocity engineering team on-site in Munich, Germany and own backend systems end-to-end — turning the messy physical flow of goods into programmable, reliable, and scalable software.
Visa sponsorship is available. The company operates in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) / AI supply chain management sector, with a product suite spanning demand forecasting, inventory optimization, automated supplier communication, and AI-driven exception handling. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Design and implement backend systems that power AI-driven supply chain decisions. - Architect data models and pipelines to ingest and organize messy, real-world data.
- Ensure user requests and plans are processed in real time for reliable, continuous execution. - Build scalable, high-performance SQL queries and data access patterns for large datasets. - Ship production-grade services using modern backend frameworks and rigorous testing practices. - Collaborate closely with the core product and engineering team to translate complex logistics problems into elegant software. - Own and improve deployment and runbook processes to keep systems running 24/7.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Must-haves: - 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Backend Engineer with a strong track record of designing and shipping real products. - Proficiency in Python and modern backend frameworks such as FastAPI, with solid testing skills using tools like pytest. - Experience with AI code generation and management tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode), including parallelizing instances for continuous operation.
- Proven ability to own backend systems end-to-end — from data architecture through to real-time request processing. - Strong SQL skills, including writing high-performance queries over millions of data points. - Experience organizing and managing messy, unstructured, real-world data. - Solid system design skills and experience building scalable data architectures with minimal supervision. Nice-to-haves: - Experience building unstructured data ingestion systems.
- Familiarity with frontend frameworks and their testing ecosystems. - Experience with DevOps practices and AWS. - Background in supply chain, logistics, or CPG industries. You'll thrive here if you: - Have a practical, builder mindset and are comfortable choosing the right tools for the job. - Enjoy working autonomously in a small, fast-paced team at an early-stage startup. - Are excited about applying AI tooling to accelerate your own engineering workflow.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS - Salary: $110,000 – $200,000 USD annually (or local equivalent) - Visa sponsorship available - Opportunity for significant equity and career growth at an early-stage, well-backed startup LOCATION This is an on-site role based in Munich, Germany. Candidates should be willing to work from the Munich office. Visa sponsorship is available for qualified candidates.
